Call for papers for the IACL conference on “The relationship between democracy and systems of government” in Baghdad, 19-20 January 2024.

Conference theme

Against the backdrop of recent challenges that democratic systems have faced in different parts of the world, this conference will focus on the evolving relationship between democracy and systems of government.  In particular, the conference will focus on how democratic institutions have performed when faced with recent challenges, and what can be learned from recent trends.

Background

Following the independence of most Africa countries from the 1960s onwards, there has been a consciousness for a united Africa founded on sustained economic development. That this has been an enduring ambition for the continent is understandable. Under the weights of centuries of colonial rule, most of Africa remains poor characterised by uneven economic leverage and fiscal and structural adjustment programmes suited and reflective of the developmental agenda of the global North. Although many African States gradually began to experience investment booms, particularly from the 1990s onwards, these gains were not sufficient.

Following the appointment of the Electoral Committee at the 2018 Biennial Conference in Botswana, documents have been prepared for presentation to the General Assembly in terms of that mandate.

These documents include the Rules and Schedules for the ANCL Elections and the ANCL Constitution with proposed amendments.
