                               CADBURY FELLOWSHIP SCHEME AND WORKSHOP

The Centre of West African Studies at the University of Birmingham (www.cwas.bham.ac.uk) invites applications for the 2012 Cadbury Fellowship Scheme, which, while taking note of the centenary year of the foundation of the African National Congress, will focus on issues in South Africanist research that resonate with African Studies more broadly.

Three visiting fellows from Africa will be appointed to participate in a ten-week schedule of seminars,  discussion groups, and other activities. One aim of the scheme is to assist new scholars to develop a research paper and bring it to publication, and the programme will culminate in an interdisciplinary workshop to be held at the University of Birmingham on 18-19 May 2012 at which the visiting fellows will present their papers alongside an international cast of both established and younger participants.

Fellowships will cover return air-fare, accommodation and living costs for a period of up to ten weeks. The deadline for applications for fellowships is 1 December 2011.

ONLINE PUBLICATION AVAILABLE

The Center  for Reproductive Rights has recently published their second volume of " Legal grounds: reproduction and sexual rights in African Commonwealth Courts" Courts"

Legal Grounds II is a tool for organizations, individuals, and institutions of learning. Though the study of reproductive and sexual health as a human rights discipline on the African continent is still at a relatively young stage, a number of countries, including Nigeria and South Africa, are developing the discipline in their tertiary institutions. This publication is a compelling resource for students in this field.

In addition, it is a contribution towards a knowledge base for jurisprudence that bears directly or indirectly on reproductive and sexual health as human rights, and is conducive towards building and entrenching a human rights culture on the African continent.

Proposed new working group /nouveau groupe de travail proposé

University-based legal aid clinics provide much-needed access to justice for the communities in which they operate as well as providing a rich learning experience for law students through the use of innovative and practical teaching methodologies. Several law clinics have been established in Africa over the last decade.

The working group would focus on regional integration of these clinics so that they can more effectively collaborate. It would assist prospective clinicians to establish clinics and clinical associations in their countries.  Through collaboration, clinics would then be able to explore possibilities for exchanges and partnerships in their work with an objective to deepen the culture of human rights and governance on the Continent. Should you be interested in joining this working group , please contact Meetali Jain at m.jainsa@gmail.com .
